    • The World Gypsy Festival Khamoro 2001
      May, 2001
The energy and passion of Gypsy culture will be on display in all its glory this May when the third annual Khamoro (Romanes for ŇsunshineÓ) Festival opens in Prague. The always popular series of concerts featuring the best performers of traditional Gypsy music, including the legendary accordion player, Lelo from Denmark, the singer Vera Bila from the Czech Republic, and the world renowned Russian Gypsy band ILO, will be highlighted this year by Gypsy jazz gigs, a parade through the center of the city, and presentations of powerful Gypsy films. Drawing over 5,000 spectators and solid ratings on both Czech television and radio, last yearŐs festival became the largest Gypsy cultural event in all of Europe, and this year promises to be even more spectacular. But the Khamoro festival isnŐt just about great music and art. It also has a social mission. The Khamoro aims to increase awareness of the Roma in Czech and European society by casting light on their rich cultural traditions and the best contemporary expressions of their artistry. So if you needed one more excuse to come to Prague in May, the Khamoro Festival from the 22nd to the 26th definitely provides it.
